Perhaps a mistake that cannot be undone, perhaps misplaced life values, or simply a desperate solution to a desperate situation. We do not judge.
This is the story of Mr. Michal, who, after more than six years, saw his mother behind the high walls and barbed wire of a maximum-security prison. The Ambulance of Fulfilled Dreams brought her from the Prachatice hospice to the prison. Fears, tears, and trembling overtook her as she faced a meeting that, given her diagnosis, was unmistakably a now-or-never moment.
It is difficult to imagine the thoughts of these two people who deeply love each other as they experience their final meeting in such a place. Perhaps guilt, perhaps regret, and possibly fear about what comes next, “when the other is no longer here.”
Making such a dream come true requires understanding and tolerance, something fully embraced by the prison director, Col. Petr Popelář, M.A. His support made this visit possible under strict security measures, and he helped organize the event. We deeply value such collegial support and thank the Czech Prison Service and the Kynšperk nad Ohří Prison. We also extend our gratitude to the staff and leadership of the St. John N. Neumann Hospice in Prachatice for their excellent care and communication.
